Web Trucs #2: History, travel, Paris restaurants
There's a new (to me) website called Mahalo which bills itself as a "human" search engine. "Experts" construct pages which provide organized links to a topic. The current page on the history of France has chronological listings of different periods with links to the best site that would explain the topic: thus "Napoleon" links to Napoleonica.com. Maybe the history page leans too much on wikipedia, but it's a helpful resource, and good tool. The page is still under construction and available in something called "The Mahola Greenhouse"; I presume it will eventually move to the main Mahola site.
A "not-so-French" resource, but one that's adaptable, is The Times (U.K.) list of the best travel sites. A mix of mapping sites, booking portals, and U.K. resources, it might be handy if you're planning a trip.
Lastly, there's a website called "Best Restaurants Paris," a commercial site. I don't get the sense that it's comprehensive, but it's probably no more biased that an Frommer's or a Fodor's. (HT to Frogsmoke.)

Hello,
I work at Mahalo, and I was so pleased to read that you liked our page on the History of France. We've moved the page from the Greenhouse to the main site, if you'd like to see our final version (http://www.mahalo.com/History_of_france).
I also wrote a page on How to Speak French (http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Speak_French) which I'm very proud of. I'd love it if you took a look!
Mahalo,
Sara

Sara: There's been a need for a good French history reference, so you've done a great service. I'll be sure to check out the language site.

Thank you for being willing to check out the page.
I see that the links I sent aren't working, due to the parentheses I used, so I wanted to post them again:
